So just a quick few words before I get to my paper. And as soon as this paper is finished, it's off to St. Louis for a jam-packed weekend of Senegalese roads with a few sprinkles of sightseeing.
Tuesday was Marianne's birthday. As her closest neighbor, I thought it my duty to eat part of her birthday cake. Although cake had to wait until Wednesday night when we celebrated with her host family because on Tuesday we went out for Spanish cuisine (tapas!) in a hoity-toity district of Dakar. The whole evening (food, drinks, cab) probably cost max 8 bucks per person- oh how I love Senegal!
Thursday was no school! Because of changes in the schedule and classes being shifted around this week, I was pleasantly surprised when all of a sudden I didn't have class on Thursday. It ended up being an eventful day even so- first, a trip to the market with my host sister where I ended up finding 3 beautiful patterns for senegalese clothing (pictures on Monday). Then a trip to the beach as a reward for my hard work. It was so much fun playing in the huge waves. Although many mouthfuls of water taught me that the Altantic tastes much different than Long Lake or Lake Harriet.
Now it's off to St. Louis! I'll post on Monday (hopefully). Although first I need to finish my assessement of Senegal's informal economy and development.
My thoughts: the informal economy (vendors in markets and at the side of the road) reigns. It's the perfect example of capitalism, yet it's terrible because the government receives no tax revenu from transactions and quality is a matter of luck. Obviously my blue roots are showing through....
