On Monday, we celebrated Korite to mark the end of Ramadan. Ramadan began the week before my arrival, and so it will be interesting to see what things change now that it is over. Senegal is 95% Muslim and so almost the entire city of Dakar was observing Ramadan.
For the past month, the entire family has been fasting. Somehow are schedules just weren’t matching up… I would wake up at 7am, leave at 8 then not return until 8pm or so. With school all day, and not used to walking 45min there and then 45min back from school, I’ve been ready to call it a day at 11:30pm or so. The rest of ‘em eat breakfast at 5am and so then sleep through me getting up to leave. Then we break the fast at 7pm, eat dinner between 10-11pm and then go to bed at 3am or so to take a short nap before having to wake up for breakfast. I’m ready to go to bed when they are just starting.
For Korite I had to get a dress made. Even though I feel as if I am somewhere between a big ball of blue cotton candy and a Barbie doll, the dress is beautiful! (pictures to come when I can get things figured out). I braved the market with Maman and Baaly (my older sister) to get the fabric but it was definitely worth battling against the crowds.
