Oh la la! Dakar Fashion!

This weekend I got the chance to scope out the current trends for my upcoming Tabaski outfit. Tabaski, (most commonly known as Eid al-Adha or Greater Eid) comes a little over 2 months after the end of Ramadan. Korité, which marks the end of Ramadan, is a big holiday, and Tabaski is just as important, maybe even more so because each head of family needs to sacrifice a goat.

More on this holiday later. There'll be at least a few blogs about it coming up.

We're still 2 weeks away; it will be on the 26th or 27th of October - it depends on when the imam or marabout sees the moon, if I understand it correctly. Thank goodness we're still 2 weeks away, because I don't have anything to wear!!! Every woman's dilemma for any important occasion, whether in the US or in Senegal.

Luckily, this weekend I got more than enough inspiration!

On Friday, Kaela (a good friend from the University of Minnesota who also went to Senegal through my program and is now working with Tostan as well) and I joined up with Alisa, another Tostan-er, for a night of feasting - for our stomachs and our eyes. Terrou-bi (the same hotel as my day of babysitting) hosts events every Friday night - concerts, performances, and as it turns out, fashion shows too.

The food is delicious! A little on the pricey side (which here means about $10-$16 for an entrée), but there wasn't any additional cover for the fashion show. We were a little worried since we didn't have reservations, but we managed to snag a table right along the catwalk.

Enjoy some pictures of Senegalese haute couture!

My own two fashionistas - my host nieces, Mame Bousso and Sokhna Meye
If you're still looking for some more Senegalese fashion, here's the link to Dakar Fashion Week. Unfortunately missed it this year (it was in June), but you can still revel in it online!
